What is Mediation?

Mediation can help individuals or groups resolve conflicts using a neutral mediator who helps keep the focus on reaching workable agreements.

Unlike court cases, mediation is   confidential and scheduled at the    convenience of the parties involved.   Parties also maintain control of the process including the nature and scope of their agreements.

Mediation works for all involved.  It’s an opportunity to save time, money, and possibly even a relationship.

Youth

School and Community Based Mediation Programs for Youth

  • Teach conflict resolution and problem solving skills to students individually or in groups who are experiencing discipline or attendance challenges at school.

  • Provide mediation to students engaged in conflict at schools located in Buncombe County.

  • Offer peer mediation training to youth in schools and community youth programs.

  • Create training opportunities for school faculty as well as community youth workers in mediation, de-escalation, and conflict resolution strategies.

Juvenile Court Programs

  • We work in collaboration with the Juvenile Court system and are able to support our clients with services in Truancy Mediation, Victim/Offender Mediation, and General Mediation.
  • Truancy Mediation involves individual 'Guided Problem Solving' sessions with students on a Diversion Contract from Juvenile Justice. ('GPS' gives youth an opportunity to look toward their future and create life goals for themselves.)
  • Victim Offender Mediation allows victims to (voluntarily) face their offenders and have a meaningful discussion about the consequences of their actions.
  • Prior to mediation we provide one-on-one lessons in positive Conflict Resolution with each juvenile client.

GANG PREVENTION AND INTERVENTION

The Youth Program provides Coordination services for the Buncombe County Gang Violence Prevention Project. The BCGVPP is a collaborative comprised of local social service, law enforcement and state agencies working together to promote gang prevention, intervention and suppression in Buncombe County. The Youth Program also provides conflict resolution and mediation services to gang involved youth housed in the Swannanoa Valley Youth Development Center.

LIFE SKILLS

Life Skills is a support program for youth and their families. Through active participation, families increase their ability to solve their own problems, respond to emotions appropriately, de-escalate and resolve conflict, create appropriate boundaries and address inappropriate behavior. Families will complete three projects:

Defining House Rules
Conflict Action Plan
Family Communication Agreement
